Local company plans initiative to promote skilled trades opportunities, awareness
Sarasota, Fla. – Aqua Plumbing & Air, a local heating, air conditioning and plumbing company, invites the community to recognize National Skilled Trades Day on May 5, 2021. In an effort to celebrate those who are employed as skilled trades workers, the company hopes to inform the community about the benefits of skilled trades jobs and encourage those considering careers within the industry, by partnering with local job fairs, hiring organizations and technical colleges and trade schools.
“As a company and a community, we are well aware the impact of the drastic drop of interest in skilled trades positions over the past 30 years. With the push to attend universities and colleges, only 20% of high school seniors express an interest in the field, while we are facing labor shortages due to lack of qualified tradesmen and women, and those retiring from the field. Simply put, there are more jobs than workers,” said Chuck Jacobson, co-owner of Aqua Plumbing & Air.
Established by City Marine Technologies in 2019, National Skilled Trades Day aims to “increase awareness about the benefits of skilled trades jobs in the United States and to celebrate skilled trades workers,” according to a press release distributed by City Marine Technologies.
“Not only are those in skilled trades likely to graduate and begin working faster than those attending a university; there is an opportunity to avoid the debt that typically comes with a four-year degree. Those in skilled trades often only need a certification to start their career, which means they can begin earning with little to no debt from education. National Skilled Trades Day aims to raise awareness – if we are going to create growth in our country, we must celebrate the critical jobs that fall under Skilled Trades,” said Jacobson.
