Sarasota Military Academy (SMA), a local public charter school, has announced plans for the 2019 SMA Wreaths Across America Campaign through an annual partnership with Wreaths Across America, a nonprofit that aims to remember fallen U.S. veterans, honor those who serve and teach children the value of freedom.
“We are proud to be involved in this annual campaign with a goal this year to cover 15,000 gravesites at the Sarasota National Cemetery,” said SMA Colonel Christina Bowman, Sarasota Military Academy Executive Director of Schools. “When you sponsor a wreath, not only are you helping us honor our local resting veterans while teaching our cadets about those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country, you are also supporting SMA and our cadets and staff.”
During the annual wreath-laying ceremony at the Sarasota National Cemetery, SMA cadets and community members participate in honoring veterans and remembering their sacrifices and service. Through partnerships with other schools and organizations throughout Sarasota, Manatee and Charlotte counties, this campaign has been led by SMA cadets, the Parent Teacher Cadet Council (PTCC), staff and families since the Sarasota National Cemetery opened in 2009.
The annual campaign yields five dollars back to SMA for each wreath sponsored, and fundraising dollars support cadet classroom and extra-curricular activities for both Sarasota Military Academy high school and Prep middle school cadets. Sponsorships and donations will be accepted until Friday, November 22, 2019.
The ceremony at Sarasota National Cemetery, located at 9810 State Road 72 in Sarasota, is scheduled to begin at 10am on December 14, 2019. Parking is first come, first served and wreath-laying will begin at 10:30am; families will lay personal wreaths first with the event ending at approximately 11am.
