Sarasota Teacher Receives CDC Fellowship Opportunity

Sarasota Military Academy (SMA) teacher Todd Brown, PhD., creator of the SMA “Inspire Project” curriculum, was recently accepted into the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Science Ambassador Fellowship program for 2019 – 2020.

One of only thirty teachers around the world to receive this invitation, Dr. Brown is the only non-science or math teacher involved in the fellowship, which includes a 5-day summer course at the CDC headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, and a 1-year distance-based professional development opportunity.

According to the CDC website, during the summer course, participants interact with CDC scientists, participate in panel discussions, attend seminars, develop challenging and innovative public health STEM lesson plans, tour CDC’s state-of-the-art facilities, expand their professional networks and earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

In addition to this designation, Dr. Brown is a recipient of the “Ignite Innovation” award from the Education Foundation of Sarasota County and serves as a Teach Sustainable Development Goals Ambassador for the United Nations. In 2018, Dr. Brown was invited to speak at the AdvancED Global Conference in Egypt and Saudi Arabia and he was nominated for the CNN Heroes Award by Harvard University, among other honors.
